I had both girls again yesterday and took them strawberry picking. We went to Flying Cloud Farm at a friend's suggestion for melt-in-your-mouth organic strawberries. Mmm...
Of course we had to make strawberry shortcake.
I wasn't planning to give them knives and cutting boards, but when I said "we" need to slice the strawberries first, they each expected one. I've never given Maia a knife before and I doubt Marlise has used one for cutting either. But I figured strawberries would cut okay with a table knife, so I set them each up. They were so focused and content! It worked out really well and they were able to slice the strawberries just fine. What else could a toddler slice easily with a table knife? The strawberries seemed ideal for a first cutting experience, but I'm sure there are must be other good options.
And here's the end result: heart-shaped shortcake, fresh picked strawberries, and whipped cream. It doesn't get much better than this.
